Borosilicate Glass vs Soda-Lime Glass: What’s The Difference?

When shopping for glass food storage containers, you will encounter two main glass types: borosilicate glass and soda-lime glass. While both are glass at first glance, their material composition, heat resistance, durability and kitchen suitability are vastly different. Understanding these differences helps you avoid cracked glassware and choose safe containers for meal prep, reheating and daily storage.

Material Composition

Borosilicate Glass is formulated primarily from silicon and boron. Boron reduces the glass thermal expansion coefficient, making it resistant to sudden temperature swings.

Soda-Lime Glass is ordinary glass made from silicon, sodium and calcium. It is the most common low-cost glass for cups, jars and cold storage containers. Soda-lime glass is thick and heavy, but the molecular structure is sensitive to temperature changes.

Heat Resistance & Thermal Shock Performance

  • Borosilicate Glass: Thermal shock resistance of 100–200°C. It can safely move from freezer to microwave or oven without cracking.
  • Soda-Lime Glass: Poor thermal shock resistance. Rapid temperature change may cause cracks. It is not recommended for boiling water, microwave or oven heating. It is only suitable for cold or room-temperature storage.

Density & Texture

Soda-lime glass has a higher density, so it feels heavier for the same volume. Borosilicate glass is lighter, clearer, and can be made with thinner walls while retaining strength. You can tell the difference by comparing weight and transparency between the two glass products of the same size.
